Tucked between Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Entebbe, Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda's most biodiverse parks despite its compact 260 square kilometres. It is the most accessible national park on the Uganda safari circuit — just four to five hours by road from Kampala or Entebbe — making it a perfect add-on to any itinerary or a rewarding short break from the capital.
The park's habitats are strikingly varied: acacia woodlands, dry hills, rocky outcrops, open and wooded savannah, lakes and papyrus swamps support 68 mammal species and over 350 bird species. Lake Mburo is famous for hosting Uganda's only population of impalas and one of the best places in the country to see plains zebra (Burchell's Zebra), which are absent from most other Ugandan parks. Other mammals include Common Eland, Defassa Waterbuck, Topi, Bushbuck, Bohor Reedbuck, Oribi, Klipspringer, Duiker, Cape Buffalo, Sitatunga, Rothschild's giraffe, Warthog, Spotted Hyena and African Civet.
For birders, Lake Mburo is exceptional — it is the best place in Uganda to find the Grey-crowned Crane, Uganda's national bird. The Shoebill can be found in the Waruki and Miriti swamp valleys, and notable species include Finfoot, Brown-chested Plover, Southern Ground Hornbill, Papyrus Gonolek, Yellow-billed Oxpecker, Black-bellied Bustard and the endemic Red-faced Barbet.
Activities are uniquely diverse: game drives through the savannah, guided walking safaris on trails including the Rubanga Forest Trail, salt lick trail and lake shoreline paths, and 90-minute boat safaris on Lake Mburo (morning 8am and afternoon 4pm sessions) for hippos, crocodiles and fish eagles. Lake Mburo is also the only protected area in Uganda where horseback riding is permitted — four-hour rides operated by Mihingo Lodge end with a sunset sundowner at the hilltop viewpoints. Mountain biking through savannah areas bordering the park is available from Rwakobo Rock. Best visited during June to August and December to January.
