The Serengeti is one of the world's most iconic wildlife sanctuaries, spanning 14,763 square kilometres of endless golden savanna. Home to the greatest terrestrial spectacle on Earth — the annual Great Wildebeest Migration — where more than 2 million wildebeest and thousands of zebras and gazelles move in an endless circuit through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara in search of green pasture. The ecosystem supports lion prides, cheetah coalitions, vast elephant herds, and over 500 bird species. The name derives from the Maasai word 'Siringet', meaning 'the place where the land moves on forever'.
