Tsavo West National Park may be smaller in size with less wildlife than Tsavo East National Park, but its scenery more than makes up for it. At 9,065 square kilometres, the park is home to the Big Five — cape buffaloes, lions, leopards, elephants and black rhinos within the Ngulia Sanctuary. Together with Tsavo East National Park, it forms the large Tsavo Conservation Area, separated by a railway line and the Mombasa–Nairobi Road.
The park's landscape is strikingly varied: savannah ecosystems including scrublands, open grasslands, riverine and acacia woods, alongside the Shetani Lava Fields — fifty square kilometres of black volcanic rock formed a few hundred years ago (Shetani means 'devil' in Kiswahili) — the crystal-clear Mzima Springs, Lake Jipe and Chaimu Volcano. Tsavo West is famous for its maneless 'man-devouring lions', large red elephants, and the last remaining Hirola antelopes in Kenya. Other wildlife includes giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles, Gerenuk and Lesser Kudu.
The Ngulia Sanctuary was established to protect the critically endangered black rhino: poaching reduced the population from an estimated 20,000 in 1940 to fewer than 20 by 1989; conservation efforts have now brought numbers back above 100. With over 400 recorded bird species — including the Taita falcon, Narina trogon, Somali Ostrich, Pangani longclaw and Golden pipit — the park ranks among Kenya's finest birding areas. The Mzima Springs allow underwater viewing of hippos and Nile crocodiles through a submerged observation window.
Activities include morning, afternoon and evening game drives, guided walking safaris along multiple park paths led by armed guides, and exploring Mzima Springs. The best time to visit is during the dry months of June to October and January to February. The park lies five to six hours from both Mombasa and Nairobi by road, with fly-in options available from either city.
